Part A - Research and site visit

 LANEWAY CULTURE

- Melbourne’s center place attracts local workers, who may stop before and after work for a coffee and something to eat.

- The visuals and theme of the laneway appeals to a younger generation, youth and possible uni students as it is a social destination for them.

- The culture is diverse as laneway is home to many cultures such as the art culture music culture, youth culture, and fashion/entertainment culture.

LANEWAY, MELBOURNE

The laneway is home to several vibrant bars, cafes, restaurants, boutiques, sushi bars and shops, as well as some of Melbourne's best examples of street art and graffiti, particularly stencil graffiti, known as "City Lights".

This precinct has been used in tourist promotion campaigns for the city.

It is made up of a laneway and arcade that runs between Flinders Lane and Collins Street. The laneway is the most interesting part because it has a hotpotch of colourful cafes and arcade shops.

Above the shops are residential apartments, some with small metal balconies overlooking the lane.

LANEWAY BRIEF

 - Central place, laneway is very narrow and shop owners have very little space to set up table and chairs outside.

- Limited space also requires furniture to be stackable for convenient storage.

- The chair will most likely be used for durations of up to 1 hr, as an average therefore it must provide adequate comfort for the user for a long period of time.

- Solid materials with weather resistance will be needed as the furniture will be outdoors for long days.

- Uneven floors along the strips is a loop hole which needs to be solved, therefore the chair needs to be sturdy.

- The white line we see in images below, is there for a reason. This line is like the yellow line at a train station. No furniture is allowed past this line as a regulation.
